Sneak Peak at Staples (Oct 21-26)

Here are some of the Staples deals that might be of interest:

  • Free Candy with purchase of an HP black and color ink combo. I kid you not, they are giving candy away with ink purchases. Just don't eat the ink :)
  • They also have a big printer blowout. The printers are too many to mention, for a list check for the weekly Staples circular ad in your Sunday paper or Staples.com.
  • Free HP D1455 color inkjet printer after Easy Rebate with the purchase of any HP or Compaq notebook or desktop PC
  • The best laptop deal is probably the Acer Aspire AS5520 for $600, without any rebates. A decently spec'ed notebook that's good for most applications. Obviously not for running serves or doing heavy duty graphics or gaming work and such. But for most people this sounds awesome with capital A!
  • 10% back in rewards this month on printers and all-in-one printers. Staples screwed up by tweaking their rewards program and now they are desperately trying to find ways to get people interested in it again. Here is a simple way to fix it: GO BACK TO YOUR ORIGINAL REWARDS PROGRAM where every purchases earns at least 1% :) Simple, eh?
  • If you buy two HP toners, you get a 50pk of blank HP branded DVD-R or DVD+R
  • 50pk of Memorex slim line jewel cases for $9
  • In-Store PC Tune-up and Security Check
  • Norton 360 $20 after mail-in rebates
  • Free crap with Epson ink purchases as well
  • 19" Viewsonic LCD monitor with iPod Dock (as if!) for $230
  • Camera wise you can get the Kodak C613 for $100 or the M853 for $150. Or the Canon Powershot A560 for $150. Also free printers by mail-in rebate with the purchase of select digital cameras. Check the store or the ad or the website for more details.
  • Plastic rolling carts are $20 each. A good alternative way for temporary or permanent storage of junk that gets in the way :)
  • Lots of office desks and office chairs on sale as well. Check ad for more.
  • Free after mail-in rebates: American Telecom DECT 6.0 2/pack cordless phone
  • A number of popular office supply products are two for $6. This includes 5-packs of Sharpies.
  • That's all folks! :)

  • Maxim 2-year magazine subscription for just $12

Sneak Peak at Staples October 14 through 20, 2007!

    Interesting?

  • 10% in Staples rewards on ink, paper and copy and shipping during the whole week. As you may recall Staples cheapened up and changed their rewards program a few months ago to only include ink, paper, copy and shippping. No more 1% on everything. Boooooo @ Staples!
  • 29c color copies, no limits
  • Casio EX-Z75 digital camera with an accessory kit for $180. Not bad for this trendy fashionable ultracompact digital cameras! This camera is part of a Breast Cancer Awareness campaign.
  • The Sony Cybershot W80 that was recently reviewed at dpreview.com will be on sale for $200
  • Free after mail-in rebate is the Norton Internet Security Hogware Suite 2008, for up to 3 users.
  • 19" widescreen LCD monitor of the Staples brand for $190
  • 100pk of blank HP DVDs for $28
  • 100pk Staples CD/DVD slim-line jewel cases for $15

But perhaps the most interesting item of the week is the Acer Aspire AS4520 laptop computer for a flat $500 without any rebates to be sent. This is a loaded laptop for the price range, given that it has a built-in webcam and memory card reader on top of the usual assortment of features such as dvd burner and 120gb hard disk. The only downside for some people is that it has a 14.1" widescreen. But for those who like smaller laptops/smaller screens, this would be a plus. Plus if you are going to be using this at home or at the office most of the time, you can always pick up one of those 17" or 19" widescreen LCD external monitors for $150 to $200.

As you can see, there are no door busters next week (other than the Acer), perhaps trying to make up for some of the good offers going on this week. And it's not too late to take advantage of this week's special offers, which includes the Compaq Presario F730us notebook computer at the very nice price of $450 after a $30 mail in rebate. If they have any in stock, this is definitely worth a look!

Amazon has recently launched a new shoes and handbags mainly website that has a twist: They pay you, yes, pay you $5, if you select overnight shipping. That's right. Strange as it may sound, they pay you five dollars to receive your order overnight!

The shoes featured are from designer brands, and it includes a variety of their product line-up. The website? Endless.com. Some of the designer names featured are Bruno Magli, Kenneth Cole, Bally, Allen Edmonds and lots more!

I haven't personally bought anything from their website, so I can't give you my first hand experience, but if you find something you like, and the price is right, then it's worth a risk, since you get paid $5 for an overnight delivery.

But wait there's more! If you have a blog or website, especially if you are writing about fashion and pop culture, you can join their affiliates program and earn some cash from any sales originating from your blog or website. Interesting?

Get two gifts or just one. Enjoy it in style. Stylishly embossed with a hologram, the Appointment Book is 8.5" x 8.5" with silver-edged pages. The Mini-Scheduler has almost the same features and yet at 3.25" x 6.75", it's so small it fits in your pocket.

    More details at their website.

    Columbus day spectacular at Staples!

    Computer and Electronics
Where do we start? How about a 32" LCD HDTV from Mag(who?) for $500, no rebates. Well, that's why it's $500 :-) The model number is MA-32EF1ASP, and good while supplies last. Meanwhile a 19" Acer LCD wide-screen monitor is just $140 without rebates. Not bad!

The Compaq Presario F730us laptop is a very nice deal at $450 after $30 rebate. A very nice sub-$500 laptop for sure. Meanwhile for desktop hunters, the Compaq Presario SR5210NX is $400 after an Easy rebate. It includes a 17" wide LCD monitor W179, Centrino 420 (no jokes please!), 1gb ram, 120gb disk, supermulti dvd burner avec lightscribe, and Vista Premium. Not bad for a pre-packaged brick and mortar deal I say.

Because it's never a bad time to accessorize, how about a 4gb PNY Readyboost USB flash drive is just $30 without any rebates? Nice price! Meanwhile Microsoft wants your business because the Microsoft 1000 wireless optical keyboard/mouse combo is just $20 without rebates. But the keyboard is big and ugly :(

And how about some memory? The PNY 1GB DDR II PC5300 desktop or laptop memory is $40, while the PNY 1GB DDR PC3200 desktop memory is $60. Same price for the PNY 1GB DDR PC2700 notebook memory.

    DVD Media Sales!
Save your data on 100pks of Sony DVD-R or DVD+R for $23 per spindle. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that comes out to 23c per blank dvd. Want less? A 50pk costs $13, which comes out to 26c per blank. And for those who care, some of them might be Made in Japan. Your mileage may (and will) vary!

On the non-Sony front, Kodak's 50pk goes for $10 translating to 20c per blank. I suggest getting the Sonys for an extra 3c per blank!

And finally the rewriteables are on sale! Woohoo! A 25pk of Sony DVD-RW or DVD+RW goes for $13, meaning 52c per blank rewriteable.

And where to store the DVDs? How about a 50pk of Staples branded slim-line jewel cases for $8 (16c per disc) or a 224-CD/DVD Staples-branded binder for $10 after a $5 Easy Rebate. The binder is clearly a more affordable solution as it comes out to about 4.5c per disc. These may be limit 10 per rebate but ask/check!

    Everything else

  • A nameless Targus backpack is on sale for $10 after a $20 Easy Rebate. Wow?
  • Double your business card order for up to 500 free business cards. Business cards in the internet era? Well, why not? As long as you recycle them after you are done :)
  • Creative Zen V Plus, a cutesy 2gb mp3 player for $70. For the same price but after an Easy Rebate you can get the Sansa E250, also at 2gb. Meanwhile the 30gb Microsoft Zune continues to slide in price, now $200 even. Want something really cheap that has the stones? The Creative 1gb Zen Stone is just $35 and without any rebates!
  • The Tracfone Motorola C139 is $15, while Motorola Tracphone V170 is $20. Both are for usre with the Tracfone pre-paid cellular phone service.

    Free after rebates
  • Norton Internet Security 2008 for 1 to 3 PCs, after mail-in rebates
  • Peachtree Pro Accounting 2008, after mail-in rebates
  • Zenith Philips universal remote, after EasyRebate, may be up to 10 per address, ask or check first!
  • American Telecom DECT 6.0 cordless phone free after $20 Easy Rebate. Please note: Rebate valid upon activation of FREE long-distance minutes. Limit 1 ATS rebate per SKU per household

  • Analyzing the Chase Freedom Credit Card Rewards program

You may have seen the ads on tv, or on the net about this new Chase Freedom Credit Cards Rewards program. So what is it and how good is it?

    Advantages

  • You can choose between cash or rewards. Your account earns either cash or rewards, and once a month you can switch between the two. The conversion is straight up, 1 point for 1 penny, so you lose nothing.
  • If you accrue $200 in cash, you will earn a $50 bonus and receive a $250 check instead. Nice!
  • Chase has a unique feature in that not only you earn 3% in select categories, but those three categories are automatically selected each month out of fifteen categories. The three categories you spend the most, are the ones that earn 3%! This is automatically done by their computers, so you don't need to select or adjust anything in your account! Nice!
  • Please note that the fifteen categories do not cover every single purchase you make. They cover 15 broad areas, which are: Grocery stores, Drugstores, Gas/Convenience stores, Fast food and quick restaurants, department stores, pet stores/vets, movie theatres and movie rentals, phone/cell bills, cable/satellite/ISP bills, gas/electric/utilities, beauty salons and spas, gym memberships, dry cleaners, and local commuting services. Each store/business must be correctly identified with Chase and categorized as such for the reward to be earned. Otherwise, no 3% reward. This is more evident with some places that sell food but are not listed as quick service or fast food restaurants.
  • You earn 1% cash back on everything else, unconditionally
  • Points expire in 3 to 5 years.
  • The card has the Blink chip so you can use it at some participating locations without swiping. Be aware that there are different "wireless" technologies, and they are not all compatible. You see technology companies never learn. I'm sure eventually they'll all be interoperable but for now, you can only use it at participating Blink locations. Check ChaseBlink.com for more details.
  • They also have an online shopping program where you visit retailers from a Chase website called Chase Rewards Plus. This ranges from 1% to 20%, usually the smaller and more niche the retailer, the higher the percentage. A number of big chain stores are participating, so if you are shopping online and are not using other referral programs such as Upromsie or FatWallet or eBates, be sure to check out the Chase Rewards Plus program! And Chase is not the only one doing it, there's Shop Discover, Shop AMEX, Citi Bonus Cash center and Thank You Network, etc, etc.

    Disadvantages
  • There is a maximum of $600 per month in purchases that earn the priviledged 3%. For purchases over $600, you will earn the standard 1% rate. For example if you spend $800 in groceries in August, you will earn $600 x 3% plus $200 x 1% = $20.
  • They do not tell you which individual purchases earns a 3% reward. They do provide the three top categories in the statement but it's up to you to figure out which purchases qualified where. Grab a calculator or your spreadsheet!

Strategy session: Comparison with other rewards programs
  • Discover has a seasonal 5% Get More rewards that overlaps with some categories. For example right now you can get 5% on restaurants with Discover. So it is more advantageous to earn 5% than 3%. However Discover maxes out your 5% benefit to $400 in purchases for the duration of the promotion ($20 in rewards in a quarter), so do your math to get the most out of it. After the first $400 in purchases in the 5% Get More categories, you will earn your current Discover rate, which could be as low as 0.25%. OUCH! But given that maybe half of the quick service/fast food restaurants take Discover, you will still benefit from using the Chase Freedom card at 3% vs 1% flat from other credit cards.
  • Citibank's 5% on groceries, drugstores and gas stations is better, but Citi has started rolling back those down to 2%. However, if you are participating in a special Citi promotion or you are still on a 5% card, it earns more to get 5% than 3%. Please note that the difference is close because in order to get a $50 gift card at Citi you need 60,000 points while at Chase you need 50,000. A $100 gift card is $100 in both programs. Still Citi has an advantage when you do the math.
  • vs 1% flat rewards programs: Chase Freedom wins those by a mile! Because the Freedom card gives you 1% on everything, and 3% on the top 3 categories, vs 1% on everything. You don't need a calculator to figure out what earns you more!

New PayPal Security Key from eBay

In an effort to increase security and decrease PayPal fraud, eBay is launching a new PayPal security key. This is a physical key that you will receive in the mail from eBay/PayPal for a small non-refundable $5 fee to cover cost and S&H.

The key changes a unique security code every few seconds, so it adds an extra layer of protection around your account. It is a small thing, think of those small mp3 players or usb drive size, rather than cell phone size.

If security is your #1 priority on PayPal and you had issues before, then it is definately worth a look. This will add an extra layer of usage since you will have to enter the security code, so for some people the extra task may not be worth the effort. It is up to you to check what it offers, guestimate your risk factors, and decide what's the right thing for your situation.
