Hot coupon in Sunday paper: $1 off with Discover Card

Don't toss out the coupons from your Sunday paper just yet! Be sure to sift through them! At least one of them is a SAVER! It gets you $1 off your purchase when you use a Discover Card to pay! This coupon can be used at any place that accepts both coupons and Discover cards.

This means that you can use it at most of the grocery stories, and any of the big box retailers that take coupons, along of course with drugstores and convenience stores.

And better yet, the coupon is good until October 31st, 2009, so there is plenty of time to use it!

Discover wants you to use your card when you go on your shopping spree. And to ensure that, they have a new promotion that gets you a $10 Gift Card for every $100 you spend at the mall using the Discover Card. This is nice, effectively an extra 10% off discount on what you buy!

The promotion is taking place at The participating malls (be sure to check for participation), and it lasts from August 1st to September 7, 2008. If you have already shopped at a participating mall, make sure you dig into your paper stash and locate your receipts! There is a limit of 5 gift cards per Discover Card account during this promotional period. So shop early, and often :-)

New Discover credit card promotions in the Sunday paper coupon books!

Discover Card has two new promotions found in the Sunday paper coupon books. This promotions promise even bigger initial bonus for new cardmembers!

Discover More Card promotion
This promotion is for a traditional Discover credit card and has the following special benefits:

  • $100 Cashback bonus after you make $500+ in purchases with your new credit card. This is HUGE! That's a great temptation on its own.
  • 0% APR on balance transfers until July 2008. Be sure to read the terms and conditions of balance transfers, and know that any subsequent purchases will be charges the full APR, as long as you have lower balances. Ideally if you plan to use this card for a balance transfer, don't use it for anything else, until you pay off the balance transfer
  • 5% Cashback bonus on select categories that change every three motnhs. Do note that these are not uncapped. There is usually a cap of how much you can earn every three months on the special 5% cashback bonus categories
  • And a negative, the standard cashback bonus on all other purchases is not a flat 1%, but rather starts at a pathetically miserable 0.25% and goes up the more you spend. The 5% cashback bonus purchases may not count towards this amount. But considering the $100 initial bonus and 0% APR until July 2009, we can forgive them this time :)
  • Platinum benefits (whatever that means)

Discover Motiva Credit Card
This is a little bit of a different credit card in that it pays you back a full month's interest every time you make six on-time payments in a row. The other benefits include:
  • $100 Cashback Bonus, just as explained above
  • 3.99% APR on balance transfers until the year 2012 (yes, twenty-twelve, the year the world may end?)
  • Up to 1% standard cashhback bonus (starts at 0.25% and increases as you spend more)
  • No special category 5% cashback bonus like the card above
  • Platinum benefits (whatever that means)

New Discover Cashback Bonus More Card special in the Sunday paper

A new Discover Cashback bonus More card offer is included in the Sunday paper, more specifically in the coupon book section, on the back page of the SmartSource coupon booklet.

This new offer promises a $75 Discover Cashback Bonus if you make $500 worth of purchases within three months of being approved for the new card. That is great news, because it's like an affective 15% reward bonus on $500 of purchases. Where else can you get that kind of a bonus? :) The invitation code is DAMV.

You also have a 3.9% APR special that lasts until 2012 (twenty twelve) on balance transfers, and you earn 5% cashback bonus on select categories that change every three months. Be sure to note however that these 5% earnings are capped, you don't get unconditional 5% earnings in each quarter.

You do get unconditional 5% to 20% off your online purchases when you make them from the Discover Card website shopping portal. The percentages are usually higher on smaller, boutique type of shops, and lower on mass market retailers. As you can expect.

For all other purchases you receive the miserable up to 1% cashback bonus from Discover. Miserable because you start at 0.25%. That is really sad. Really. In a world where Citi is offering 5% and Chase 3% (effective 3.75% if you earn $200 in cash rewards and get the $250 bonus), and just about every other cash card starts at 1%, Discover insists on starting at 0.25%. Be sure to read the fineprint on this one as it gets twisted on what counts and what doesn't. You do "graduate" to 0.50% and 0.75% and 1% eventually though.

Discover Cashback Bonus special in the Sunday paper

Discover Cards have a new promotion in the sunday paper, in the Smart Source coupon section. Be sure to check it out in your sunday paper. Here is a summary for y'all.

You recieve a $75 cashback bonus when you make $250 in purchases per month for 3 months. This comes out to $750 in purchases yielding a $75 reward. This is the equivalent of a 10% reward. GOOD!

You also get a 3.9% APR until 2010 on balance transfers. With the multiple drops in interest rates, this is something you need to look into. Depending on your credit score and other balances, you may be able to get qualify for much lower rates, even 0%, so be sure to check around first.

You also get 5% cashback bonus on select categories throughout the year. The special categories change every three months. You can also receive rewards from 5% to 20% when you make your online purchases through the Discover card online shopping portal.

The bad news for the Discover cashback rewards program is that for purchases that do not qualify for any specials, you receive a tiered cashback reward that starts at a sad and miserable 0.25%. Almost all other cashback programs have a baseline of 1% and unfortunately Discvoer continues to "ostrich" this.

For more details visit the Discover site or call their toll free number. The invitation code listed in the sunday paper is DAHX.

For more coverage of Discover in this blog, be sure to check our previous posts with the Discover tag. A total of 14 posts so far!

Special Discover Card cashback bonus promotional

Discover Card has a new promotion! You get a $75 Cashback bonus when you make your first $500 in purchases. That is a very nice 15% cashback percentage on the $500 amount! Wowie!!!

You also get 5% in special categories that change every three months, and you can get 5% to 20% discount on online purchases made through the Discover card website.

The one thing lacking with the Discover cards is that for the rest of the categories they have a tiered cashback percentage that starts at 0.25% and increases the more you spend. Boo at Discover! Fix it! Make it a flat 1% like everybody else. Come on Discover, wake up and smell the cashback rewards trends!

You also get a 3.9% APR for balance transfers. The rate is good until January 2010, that's two years from now!

To apply visit the Discover website or call the toll free phone number and mention promotion code DAHE.

Nice Discover credit card offer in the Sunday paper

If you are into credit card rewards and special promotions, you will find this interesting! On the front page of the Smart Source coupon book Discover is promoting their Cashback Bonus card. It features the following exciting features:

  • special $60 Cashback Bonus when you make your first $500 in purchases (that's like a 12% reward on the $500!),
  • 0% intro APR on purchases until April 2008 and balance transfers until October 2008
  • 5% cashback bonus when you make purchases in the Get More categories that change four times a year (on a quarterly basis). A number of popular categories are included. For example this quarter the special is travel and gas, while next quarter is restaurants and movies and movie rentals.
  • Up to 1% cashback bonus on all other purchases, using the standard Discover tiered system starting at 0.25% (boo!)
  • But wait, there's more! If you buy online starting from the Shop Discover website when you log onto your Discover account, you can get an additional bonus of 5% to 20% from a list of participating retailers. This is probably the most generous program in terms of percentages as it features a number of webpages of big chain stores at a flat 5% rate, while smaller and more specialized stores earn 10%, and some even 20%! This is nice and very competitive if you compare it to Fat Wallet or Citi Bonus Cash Center or Chase Rewards Plus.
  • This concludes this message :) And remember, please use credit responsibly!

Discover Get More 5% bonus categories from October 1 to December 31

This is of interest to Discover Card members participating in the Get More program. The Q4 Get More program has been announced and you can sign up for it right now at the Discover website or by calling their customer service. This does not invalidate your current promotion (Q3, Gas/Travel) but it simply means that you can start earning the new Get More rewards right away on October 1.

So what are the special categories for Q4? (October 1st through December 31st): 5% cashback on movies, movie rentals, online movie rentals, and restaurants all of types. Be it fast food or candle-light fine dining or the tiny cafe at the corner. As long as they are registered with Discover as a restaurant of some sort. More specifically according to Discover: "classify as full service restaurants, cafes, cafeterias and fast food locations".

However, there is a cap to this reward, only the first $400 in purchase in these categories will earn the 5% reward :-( The rest will earn rewards at your usual rate which is usually 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75% or 1%. So if you max out, you will earn $20 Cashback Bonus dollars!

Not to be confused with Shop Discover
This of course is separate from the Shop Discover program which gets you cashback rewards by visiting retailers and making purchases through the Shop Discover shopping portal. This program is valid all year round. This has some of the most generous percentage among the big box retailers, for example this big name retailer websites earn you a flat 5% such as CircuitCity.com, Crutchfield, Bloomingdales, Toshiba Direct ($50 if you buy a $1000 laptop!), Target, Tiger Direct, Sears, Office max, Macy's, Kohls (yes Kohls!), Lucky Brand Jeans and tons more! Check Discover.com for details!

Discover Card Cashback Bonus promo in the Sunday paper

Discover Card Cashback Bonus promo in the Sunday paper:

  • 3.9% APR on balance transfers until 2011
  • Special bonus: $60 cash back bonus when you make $500 in purchases
  • 5% Cashback bonus with the Discover More card, in popular categories that change every quarter (every three months). They include restaurants, gas, travel, movies, apparel (including Home Depot, Kohls, etc)
  • Online cashback bonus from 5% to 20% if you shop directly from the Discover card website. Similar to FatWallet. The high percentages are usually for things like magazines and such. The traditional big chain stores are around 5% or so
  • Up to 1% cashback on everything else. Beginning October 1, 2007, 5% Get More purchases and warehouse purchases do not count in the total annual amount that determines your cashback percentage rate. Translation: You will need to spend more to get past the 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75%
  • Unlimited rewards. Some programs put a cap.
  • Consumer Beware segment! Discover advertises unlimited cash rewards, but beginning October 1, 2007 you won't be able to get a check for your rewards. So it's not really cash. You can still use the amount to pay your bill
  • You are never responsible for unauthorized charges, online, offline, anytime, anywhere (nice feature)
  • no annual fee
  • very fast on-shore customer service with knowledgeable and efficient customer service (this from my personal experience)

Important: Changes to Discover Get More Rewards program!

I received today a letter from Discover indicating changes to the terms effective on October 1, 2007. The rewards part is on page 2 of the letter. Don't just look at the first page :) There are a few changes, but I am only talking about the ones that affect rewards and cashback bonus:

  • This reward option will be removed October 1, 2007: Mailing of a check for your rewards amount. They will still allow credits to your statement, and all the other rewards, but no check in your hands.
  • Also, the total amount of purchases made during your anniversary year will not include warehouse purchase or purchases qualifying for the 5% Get More reward. What this means is that it will take longer for you to go from 0.25% to 0.5%, etc, etc, if you make warehouse club and/or Get More purchases.
  • Forfeiting entire balance of cashback bonus or miles: if you fail to make a minimum payment for two consecutive billing periods, if your account is inactive for 18 months (previously it was 36 months)
  • Opinion: This obviously makes the rewards program less consumer-friendly. If it wasn't for the Get More program, the Discover Cashback bonus program with the tiered system starting at 0.25% would be in the bottom tier of rewards program. But the Get More program remains. If none of the above affect you directly (eg you don't get your rewards as checks in the mail) then it's all good.

Discover Card Get More: New categories for 5% (starting July 1st)

Discover Card Get More: New categories for the 5% flat-rate cashback bonus starting July 1st through September 30, 2007. According to Discover it includes the following categories:

  • Gas
  • Hotels
  • Admissions to Theme Parks, Water Parks, Museums, Aquariums, Zoos

The cap is unfortunately only $400 in purchases in this category, so the most you can earn from this promotion is 5% of $400 = $20.

They have also announced that the next quarter (October thru December) the 5% category will be restaurants (good!) and movies.

    Credit Card Rewards Strategy session

This post will be growing organically.

Here are some suggestions on how to maximize your credit cards rewards:

  • For grocery, drugstore and gas station purchases, Citibank offers 5% rewards, either in a cash-only rewards program or a rewards program (Thank You Network or Thank You Redemptions or something like that). You can have both type of cards. You can't complain with 5%! There is an annual cap on your total rewards per individual credit card.
  • Chase has a new creative idea for their Chase Freedom card. They have fifteen (15) categories of purchases. Each month, they calculate your top three categories and give you a 3% reward on those purchases. Everything else earns 1%. The categories are computer-calculated for every statement. You have a choice of rewards or cash. You can switch between the two choices once per month
  • American Express has special mail-in and email offers to receive double points for purchases until August 31, 2007. This means your Amex Blue or Optima purchases earn 2% instead of 1%. Not bad for things that don't qualify for higher rewards in other cards.
  • Discover's Get More program offers featured rewards that change every quarter (every three months). These earn you a flat 5% reward on those featured purchases regardless of your regular reward percentage status. The 5% reward has a cap per quarterly promotion
  • As always with all these, make sure you read the fineprint!

  •
