1-cent specials at Staples (starting July 6, 2008)

The students are thrilled school is out, but Staples is in a hurry to get them back to school! Their new ad, starting Sunday July 6, 2008, is having a number of 1-cent specials to entice early "back to school" shoppers. At this rate, we are going to have back to school sales the day after the previous school season ends. But that's another story. Here are the 1-cent specials, good Sunday through Wednesday July 9, or while supplies last:

• Purell 0.5oz bottles. Because you can never be too obsessed with germs. After all, the human body has zero germs ;-) Limit two per customer per visit

If you are looking for an all-around notebook at a good price, run to Staples to get the Compaq Presario F761us for just $400 after a $30 rebate. Don't let the price fool you, this notebook has everything you need for everyday work, including dvd burner, dual core processor, 15.4" widescreen, wireless, and things like that as Arnold says.

Free stuff in the Sunday Newspaper (June 15)

This is a good week for freebies in the Sunday paper! Both Rite Aid and Walgreens are offering a number of good freebies, including a trio of items for people living with diabetes. So, let us take a quick look!


Free after rebate at Rite Aid
Rite Aid rebates can be submitted online, so there is no need to mail-in receipts or cut UPC codes. These are rebates for people who hate traditional rebates.

Free after a $3 rebate is the Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship Shampoo or conditioner. I kid you not, I couldn't even make up that name even if I tried. An LTR with a shampoo? How AOLish :) Limit one per household. Do note that this is only good on the LTR shampoos only, not the whole Herbal Essences line-up!

More hair product, the Organix Shampoo or Conditioner can be yours for free after a $5.49 rebate. This is a 13oz container, and it's good for three days only, June 15 to 17. So don't sleep on this one. Only good for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday!

And now something for parents of young ones, Diapermate Disposable diaper bags, 75 count, for free after a $2.49 rebate. Limit one per, as our most of the Rite Aid rebates.

If you like one-time use film cameras, then cheer! You can get the Fuji QuickSnap for free after a $10.99 rebate. This is 400 speed, with 27 exposures. Limit one rebate. Remember, this is a one time use film camera, not a digital camera!


Free with Register Rewards at Walgreens
Walgreens has two type of freebies, the traditional free after rebate, and the newer free after Register Rewards. Register Rewards are instant rebates that you can use towards your next purchase at Walgreens. If you are a regular Walgreens customer, these are as good as cash. There is a small list of items that you cannot buy with Register Rewards (alcohol, etc), but they are good for most of the stuff in store.

And with that out of the way, you can get the Oral B Cross Action power toothbrush, or replacement brush head, for free after $5.50 in Register Rewards.


Free after mail-in rebate at Walgreens
Walgreens has a trio of products for people living with diabetes. The first two rebates are part of the monthly Walgreens EasySaver catalog rebate program. A 60-ct of Multibetic vitamins is offered for free after a $10 MIR, and a 2oz shot of GlucoShot, available in assorted flavors is offered for free after a $2 MIR. Limit one rebate per item.

The next item has the mail-io rebate on the box, it is not part of the Easysaver Walgreens rebate. You have to submit it separately. It is the Freestyle Lit or Freedom Lite blood glucose system, for free after a $10 separate MIR. MIR being mail-in rebate.

And as a bonus, you will get $4.49 in Register Rewards when you purchase the Freestyle or Freedom Lite, and you can use those on your next in-store purchase of Glucerna cereal (9.5oz or 11.1oz). See store or website for more details!

Free stuff in the Sunday paper (free after coupon or rebate!)

We all like free, free is good! And this is a good week of freebies in the Sunday paper of March 30, 2008.

We already mentioned the free after coupon special at Walgreens, free cartridge refill today only (Wednesday April 2nd), with a coupon. The coupon is easy to find, it's in the Walgreens weekly circular which can be found in the Sunday paper and in the stores. You can also print the coupon from your Walgreens email specials email, and you can probably find it on their website as well! The value of a black ink refill is $10 and color is $15. There are no prerequisites for this deal, no purchase necessary. They do have a list of printer cartridges that are compatible however, so be sure to check if your printer is in the list.


Two nice FAR Staples Delta Elite pens
Next up we have a nice two-pack of black pens at Staples, free after easy rebate. Easy Rebates can be submitted online, and you don't need to mail anything! The pens are the Staples Delta Elite black pens, retractable, and refillable with Parker-style refills. Limit one per customer. We checked yesterday at our local Staples and they still had some in store. This is Staples SKU number 492989. These are nice pens! And the Staples rebates are fairly fast and reliable!


Six FAR items at Walgreens
Meanwhile at Walgreens, we have six free after-rebate EasySaver catalog specials. We start with what you can eat: a free bar of SoyJoy 1.06oz), free after a $1.39 rebate. These are nice compact nutrition bar, but they are a bit dry and cardboard-y but eating them with a cup of water helps bring out the taste :)

Then at Walgreens we have your choice of Aquafresh Extreme Clean Polishing Action (5.6oz) or Advanced 2X Whitening (6oz), free after the rebate of $3.49. And if you need a toothbrush, after a rebate of $3.99 you can get the Colgate 360 Clean or Deep Clean toothbrush.

Next up, we have Turns Quik Pak (24 pack, Berry Fusion), after a rebate of $4.49. Yum for the tummy when it needs some help? :)

For the cosmetics buffs on a budget out there, the Jane Be Pure Mineral Brush or Kabuki brush is offered, the price before rebate is $4.99.

And last but not least, you can get the Wal-Zyr 24 hour allergy relief (5ct, 10mg), value of $3.99.

If you are not familiar with the Walgreens Easy Saver Catalog, you submit all your rebates together at the end of each month, in one envelope, and there is no need to send UPC codes. FAR at Rite Aid
RiteAid's rebates are even better than Walgreens in terms of submission. You can submit them online, entering numbers from the receipt, with no need to mail anything in! That is really nice. Then at the end of each month you request your total rebate amonut for the month. More details at Rite Aid Rebate Plus.

This week's FAR special includes the brand "Certain Dri Feet" for free after a $4 rebate. You have a choice of Powder (1.25oz) or Pads (74ct). Limit one rebate per person.

Meanwhile a double $2.50 single check rebate is offered for Lifestyles (12ct) or Excite gel (0.5oz). Limit one rebate!

And more FARs at Rite Aid! Your choice of Neutrogena Triple Moisture Shampoo or Conditioner or Serum. The rebate is $3, but it is doubled, so it becomes free after rebate!

RiteAid free after on-package mail-in rebates
These are traditional individual mail-in rebates, you have to send individually, by snail-mail and such, may have to send upc codes as well. The rebates are on the package, they are not in the RiteAid catalog.

The items? Accu-Check Aviva blood glucose meter ($20 MIR), Ascensa Contour blood glucose monitoring sytem ($10 MIR), OneTouch Ultra 2 glucose monitor ($30 MIR), and Freestyle Freedom Lite monitor ($30 MIR). MIR of course being the mail-in rebate.

Pepsi on sale for $1.25 per 2-liter at Longs Drugs

With the Pepsi Stuff promotion under way, you might be on one many people who are feverishly collecting Pepsi stuff points so you can get DRM-free mp3s from Amazon (legally of course) or other goodies. Since that promo came up, it seems that the 99c 2-liter Pepsi sales have dried up.

The best we found so far is $1.25 per 2-liter bottle at Longs Drugs. Be sure to check the bottles you buy to make sure they are participating in the promotion, and they are not older or non-participating. Look for the PepsiStuff.com text and promo on the label and at the top of the cap.

For more details, be sure to check PepsiStuff.com. It is interesting that they have cross-linked the promo with the Amazon accounts.

Office Depot deals this week (February 10 to 16, 2008)

Let's take a look at what Office Depot has in-store for us this week, (February 10 through 16, 2008). Their ad week is the standard Sunday through Saturday cycle.

Under $1 deals
You can get a 10pk of Zebra Z-Grip retractable pens for just 99 cents! Oh my! Not rebates needed! You can also get Office Depot branded glue sticks for 25c each. Remember these are glue sticks, not lip balm or lipstick ;-)


Tech deals under $10
You can get an Ativa-branded USB memory card reader for just $6. Available in SD, CF, Memory Stick Pro Duo, and microSD flavors. For a traditional 1gb USB flash drive, also by Ativa, all you pay is $8, which comes out to *drum roll* $8 per gigabyte, which is a good ratio.

If you don't object to submitting and tracking a $10 mail-in rebate, you can get the D-Link® 5-port Desktop Switch for just $5 after the MIR is received and cashed. Not bad eh?


Super Dooper Laptop deal
The Compaq Presario Model C700T Configuration Code 80409061 is your typical entry-level laptop, but with a dvd burner, 15.4" widescreen, 1gb RAM, and wireless. But it's price is very nice, $300 after a $135 mail-in rebate! Nice price!


26" widescreen HDTV for $450 (no rebates!)
A Viewsonic 26" LCD HDTV is offered at $450, and without rebates. This has 2 built-in HDMI® inputs, 1366 x 768 WXGA resolution, and it is model N2635w. If you are not familiar with it, be sure to look it up online, and check for reviews and discussions as such.


Everything else
The Philips 4GB 2.4" LCD Model SA3345 mp3 player is offered at $80 after a $40 mail-in rebate. Not bad! It comes out to $20 per gigabyte. Qualities are limited and no rainchecks for this one.

Specials in this week's Office Max weekly flyer (2/10 to 2/16/08)

Office Max, the home of no rebates allowed, is having a new round of specials for the upcoming week of 2/10 to 2/16, of the earth year 2008. Let's see what might be hot.

For laptop users, the Targus Tornado Cooler is available for $20. Especially a must if you use your laptop a lot, or if it has a battery that heats up.

Store your data at a bargain price! 100-packs of Verbatim DVD-R and DVD+R blank discs are offered for the special price of $20. That comes out to just 20c per disc. Not a bad price considering this is Verbatim. Of course the best thing to do is to check the media ID of these, to be sure you are getting a good batch.

More with the data saving theme, the 4gb Verbatim USB 2.0 flash drive is offered at just $30, the price of $7.50 per gigabyte. Anything under $10 per gigabyte at brick and mortar stores is a good price!

And a 500gb Seagate FreeAgent of the USB 2.0 variety, is offered at $120. Not a bad price for half a terrabyte.

And how about a 20" Sceptre widescreen monitor for just $170? And no rebates! Oh my!

If you don't object to "couponizing", Officemax.com has printable coupons on their website to provide you with additional savings. Check their site for more details on those.

As it is with this time of the year, tax software are offered in different prices and configurations, with different bonus items. The usual suspects of course are Quicken Turbo Tax and H&R Block TaxCut.

On the computer front, there isn't a bargain laptop, but there is a $500 desktop bundle that includes a 19" widescreen LCD. This is an HP Pavillion.

Meet the new AT&T Universal Rewards credit card

In the coupon section of the Sunday paper, on the front page of the Valassis coupon book, we find a new offer for the revamped AT&T Universal card powered by Citibank.

What are the proposed benefits of this card?

0% APR on balance transfers until December 1, 2008

up to 10% off eligible AT&T products and services for the first 12 months. Read the fine print for the details

No annual fee (as if!)

Earn 1 point for every dollar you spend (the typical 1% reward)

The most interesting part of this card is obviously the 0% APR for 12 months, and from a rewards perspective the 10% off on AT&T products. According to their own fineprint, you get 10% off on AT&T products and services for the first 12 months, and 5% after the first 12 months. However, the maximum you can earn (save) from this is $350 per calendar year.

So if you are a heavy user of AT&T products and services, or if you like the 0% APR for 12 months, then you should take a look awt this credit card.

The 1% rewards program on all other purchases is just too average these days. The program is managed by the Thank You Network, which means that the rate for cash conversions is even lower than 1%. It is an effective 1% when you have enough poitns to redeem $100 gift cards however.

Sneak Peak at Staples (Oct 21-26)

The best laptop deal is probably the Acer Aspire AS5520 for $600, without any rebates. A decently spec'ed notebook that's good for most applications. Obviously not for running serves or doing heavy duty graphics or gaming work and such. But for most people this sounds awesome with capital A!

10% back in rewards this month on printers and all-in-one printers. Staples screwed up by tweaking their rewards program and now they are desperately trying to find ways to get people interested in it again. Here is a simple way to fix it: GO BACK TO YOUR ORIGINAL REWARDS PROGRAM where every purchases earns at least 1% :) Simple, eh?

We all like free, but rebates make us work a bit harder to get our free items. But if you have the discipline and organization to submit and track rebates, then you are good candidate! Lots of goodies this week at Walgreens, advertised is a 4.2oz Colgate Total Advanced Clean toothpaste, 12ct Beano togo tablets, Pepsid Complete or Max Strength AC (8ct), Buckley's 40z Cough syrup or Chest Congestion mixture, and Breathe Again Nasal Spray (3.3oz). Also listed in the rebate booklet, but not advertised in the circular is free after rebate of up to $7.49 for select varieties of Herbal Essences Fructis shampoos (25.6oz) and deep conditioners.

You do pay sales tax which is not refunded by the rebate, but hey, it's a small amount and it helps the state :-)

Office max exclusive HP laptop bundle for $850

Office Max is touting an exclusive notebook computer bundle on the front page of the sunday paper ad (the weekly circular).

The bundle is price at $850, and in typical Officemax fashion, no rebates. It includes:

HP Photosmart C4280 color all-in-one printer

HP branded notebook backpack

HP dv6430m-b notebook computer that features an AMD Turion 64X2DC TL-58, 2gb memory, 160gb disk, dvd burner, 15.4" widescreen, b/g wireless, built-in memory card reader and built-in webcam, and Vista Premium.

The only other laptop advertised in the circular is the HP TX1205us, which features a swiveling (aka convertible) 12.1" widescreen. This is not a touchscreen however. This is priced at $900 without rebates. Uses an AMD Turion 64X2DC TL-56, 1gb ram, 160gb disk, dvd burner with lightscribe. Also b/g wireless, built-in memory card reader, and Vista Premium.

Best Buy 9/23 Sunday circular ad error correction email

Best Buy has sent an email to people on their mailing list informing them of an error in their upcoming Sunday paper circular ad (September 23).

The error is a big one, on the front page, where the 50" Panasonic TH_50PZ77U- 8501711 Plasma HDTV is advertised at $1710. Scratch that! This is in error! The correct item was supposed to have been the 42" Panasonic TH-42PZ77U-8501757 Plasma HDTV at $1710.

Of course savvy buyers may still try to get this ad price-matched at other retailers, hoping for an early Xmas present :-)

Office Depot Labor Day weekend and the weekly ad

First, let's look at the Labor day weekend ads in this post. These are good for Labor Day but not the rest of the week. And we start with a 100pk of Office Depot branded DVD-R or DVD+R for $18, bringing the price down to 18c per blank dvd. If you prefer Maxell, their 50pk is $10, which means 20c per blank DVD. Four different Maxtor hard drives are on sale starting at $70. A 2gb Sabdisk SD card is $20. Sandisk's USB stick memory card reader for SD or Memory Stick Pro Duo is just $10. Not bad eh? Think of this as an instant rebate to be used on your next purchase. Let's say you buy the item below and receive a $7 Register Rewards coupon after you pay for the item. You can use it to take $7 off your next purchase at Walgreens. Be sure to read the fineprint on the coupon as some of them may have restirctions (no alcohol, no tobacco, no dairy, no lottery, no gift cards, etc). In general these are even better than rebates because you get them in your hand right away. But they are not as versatile as cash!

Rebate Tip
If you are going to do rebates, be sure you are not half-way or half-heartedly in it. To be efficient and effective, you have to take the simple steps of processing them right away, making photocopies when you submit, and track the checks by keeping a folder with your submissions. Once a check arrives/is cashed, shred/recycle the copies in your folder (or move them to another folder if you want to keep track of your past purchases). That way your pending rebates folder will always be up to date!
