Office Depot is having back to school specials for the week, including a number of teaser freebies to get people through the door!

The free item of this week is the Child ID kit but you have to purchase a $5 ID which makes it no so free after all.

But fear not, a penny is as close to free as one can get! This week one penny will get you a 12" wooden ruler (ODP brand), a slider pencil box (nice, also ODP brand), and a TUG pencil sharpener. All these, for 1c per item!!!

Moving to 5c, we can get a 16pk of Scholastic Crayons. Nice price, don't you agree? :) Same price can get you a 2-pocket paper folder.

Free stuff in the Sunday paper (July 13, 2008)

We have a couple of nice freebies promoted in the Sunday paper this week, starting with Rite Aid, where you can get the 6-oz Crest Expressions toothpaste for free after the Single Checks Rebate for $2.49. Limit one toothpaste per rebate catalog. You have a choice of flavors, the ad shows three different ones, which look yellow-ish (citrus?), red (berry?) and green (mint?). Be sure to check with your local store for details. And the good thing with Rite aid rebates is that they can be submitted online, no need to be mailing receipts!

Next up, we have a mail-in rebate at Office Depot, that can get you a six-pack of TOPS Colored Junior Size Writing Pads. The amount is $7.49, which you will receive a mail-in rebate after you go through the whole song and dance.

Do note that rebates do not refund the sales tax, so if your state has sales tax, consider it a donation to help support your local schools and projects :)


Penny office supplies at Office Depot
Not quite free, but we think one penny is close enough! Office Depot is giving away office supplies at a penny, just like Staples did last week.

The 1c sale includes a 12-pack of red eraser caps, a 6" semicircular protractor, two-pocket paper folders and acrylic rulers. There may be limits per item, but there are many stores and of course you can visit many times. Keep the wig, moustache, and fur coat handy in the car ;-)

Zoom into Office Depot for some great laptop clearance deals, assuming you have the will and patience and fortitude to deal with mail-in rebates.

Notebook computer extravaganza at Office Depot (Sept 9 to 16, 2007)

Office Depot continues to have aggresively prices laptop deals. One thing to keep in mind is that you need to send in mail-in rebates in order to get these prices. Office Depot does not have online rebates, so you have to mail them in and patiently wait until they are received and cashed. And with that out of the way, let's look at the laptops in this week's circular, sorted by lower price first, just like you like them :-)

We have one sub-$500 laptop, albeit after two mail-in rebates ($180 total), bringing the price down to $450. The computer in question is the Compaq Presario F572us with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 DC TK-53 processor, 1gb RAM, 80gb hard disk drive, dual layer super-multi dvd burner, 802.11 b/g wireless LAN, 15.4" widescreen display, and the obligatory Vista Home Premium.

Next up the price ladder at $550 (after two rebates of $150 total) is Toshiba A125-S4697 Satellite Notebook, powered by an AMD Turion 64 X2 dual core TL-52 processor, 1gb memory, 160gb disk, dual layer dvd burner, 802.11 b/g wireless LAN, 15.4" widescreen display, and Vista Home Premium. The ad toutes "power life" but no specifics are listed.

Sony fans will be thrilled to see a Sony Vaio for $600 (after $180 in mail-in rebates). The Sony Vaio VGN-N325E/B is powered by an Intel Pentium DC T2080, and has a 1gb RAM, 120gb disk, dual layer dvd burner, b/g wireless LAN, 15.4" XBrite-ECO widescreen, and Vista Home Premium.

Next up at $650 (after $200 in mail-in rebates) is the HP Pavilion DV6426us using an Intel Centrino Duo Core Duo T2450, 1gb memory, 160gb hard disk drive, dual layer dvd burner with lightscribe, 15.4" widescreen, built-in webcam, and Vista Home Premium.

Then we have an Office Depot exclusive model, the Toshiba A215-S4757, for $800 (after $150 in mail-in rebates). The processor is an AMD Turion 64 X2 DC TL-56 with 2gb memory, 250gb hard disk drive, dual layer dvd burner, 802.11 b/g wireless LAN, 15.4" widescreen display, and Vista Premium. This is the first notebook of this ad with 2gb RAM.

And we now get into the more powerful notebooks, starting with the Toshiba A205-S4777, for $950 (after $150 mail-in rebates). It has an Intel Centrino Duo Core 2 Duo T5450, 2gb memory, 200gb disk, dual layer dvd burner with label flash, 802.11 a/b/g/N wireless, 15.4" TruBrite widescreen, built-in fingerprint reader and webcam and Vista Premium.

First let's start with the doorbusters, the under 99c items to get you in the door. Please be ware that Office Depot is a little bit different from Office Max and Staples. In order to get the low price you must purchase EXACTLY the specified amount. Weird but what can you do? Office Depot Labor Day weekend and the weekly ad

First, let's look at the Labor day weekend ads in this post. These are good for Labor Day but not the rest of the week. And we start with a 100pk of Office Depot branded DVD-R or DVD+R for $18, bringing the price down to 18c per blank dvd. If you prefer Maxell, their 50pk is $10, which means 20c per blank DVD. Four different Maxtor hard drives are on sale starting at $70. A 2gb Sabdisk SD card is $20. Sandisk's USB stick memory card reader for SD or Memory Stick Pro Duo is just $10. Not bad eh? Microsoft's Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 is just $10 too! On the computer front, there's an HP desktop system with a 20" LCD widescreen monitor for $650 after three mail-in rebates. Think of this as an instant rebate to be used on your next purchase. Let's say you buy the item below and receive a $7 Register Rewards coupon after you pay for the item. You can use it to take $7 off your next purchase at Walgreens. Be sure to read the fineprint on the coupon as some of them may have restirctions (no alcohol, no tobacco, no dairy, no lottery, no gift cards, etc). In general these are even better than rebates because you get them in your hand right away. But they are not as versatile as cash!

Rebate Tip
If you are going to do rebates, be sure you are not half-way or half-heartedly in it. To be efficient and effective, you have to take the simple steps of processing them right away, making photocopies when you submit, and track the checks by keeping a folder with your submissions. Once a check arrives/is cashed, shred/recycle the copies in your folder (or move them to another folder if you want to keep track of your past purchases). That way your pending rebates folder will always be up to date!
